And that the married couple realize there is no effective legal means to deal with the thug, and so must engage in even smarter thuggish behavior to rid themselves of him. And JDM makes it believeable, not even believeable-enough. One can see why the film folks are fascinated, and not understand why they felt the need to make the story less remarkable thus.
