Fans of the original 1971 film version of GET CARTER might be
interested in PULP, which debuted on DVD last week. It
reunited Michael Caine, writer/director Mike Hodges, and
producer Michael Klinger one year after CARTER. Caine plays
an author of paperback thrillers who gets into trouble when
he agrees to ghostwrite the memoirs of a fading Hollywood
star with Mafia connections. It's an odd movie, kind of a
shaggy-dog-story that sends up noir storytelling. I can
understand why it didn't connect with audiences; it makes a
strange follow-up to CARTER. But there are enough enjoyable
moments, and a terrific performance by Mickey Rooney as the
actor.Vince Keenanwww.vincekeenan.com
