As I have mentioned before, for my money the best ending I
can recall is from PICK-UP by Charles Willeford. This ending
forces you to reevaluate every scene, every circumstance
involved from beginning to end. It is so effective that is
spite of this being one of the most nihilistic reads ever one
is almost coerced into an instant reread thanks to this
ending. Yes, a "twist, surprise" ending but far from a
gimmicky one.
