You're right. It was a film from 1939, based on The
Postman... The first film adaptation of this novel : LE
DERNIER TOURNANT (= The last curve) by Pierre Chenal, with
Michel Simon (the husband), under others. I never saw the
film completely, only abstracts. It sets Cain's story in
France.
Before WW2 Chenal made in France two or three other films
that are also really noir.
