Thanks for those comments, Miker. That book was certainly a
turning point for me. I read it right after it came out and
decided then and there to write my doctoral dissertation on
hardboiled novels. I used the book to help convince my
director that the fiction of writers like Hammett and
Chandler was a worthy topic.
