One name that hasn't been mentioned so far is Elmore Leonard.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that I don't like his work,
because some of it I like very much, but I don't care for his
crime novels over the past ten years or so. His style has
gotten a little too terse for me, and stodgy though I may be,
I like a more straightforward style of storytelling, instead
of flashbacks inside of flashbacks inside of
flashbacks.
But I keep reading most of his books anyway, because from
time to time I still run across one that I really like.
