I reading The Best American Short Stories 2005 edited by
Michael Chabon
(Houghton Mifflin), I was surprised to find the second story
in the collection is "Until Gwen" by Dennis Lehane which had
first appeared in Atlantic Monthly. This is a very noir story
told in the second person voice. It should please everyone on
this list.
Interestingly, the editor Chabon is the author of the rather
challenging The Final Solution, a pastiche of Sherlock
Holmes.
