Minor correction: I checked in Polito's SAVAGE ART, and
Thompson was born in Oklahoma, Anadarko to be exact, on 24
October 1903. In July 1907 his family took off in in the
middle of the night. $5,000 had gone missing from the
department of Sheriff James Thompson, Jim's father. Wherever
your publisher spat, it must have been a town where Thompson
did some growing up.
Anyway, juxtaposing THE KILLER INSIDE ME with THE SPY WHO
CAME IN FROM THE COLD would be fascinating, though I can't
quite get a handle on how it would work. Lou Ford and Alec
Leamas are so different, and Ford's in charge while Leamas is
a shabby man who seems to have nothing left to live for. That
ideas's going to stick in my head.
I hope you'd do it as THE KILLER WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD
and not THE SPY WHO CAME INSIDE ME.
