Re: RARA-AVIS: Charles Williams [an offshoot of Spirited discussions, critical r

Hi Robert!

I would think somebody has done a copyright search on Fires of Youth or received confirmation from his agent or daughter. One would hope.

My speculation is a product of my failure to understand why he would write this book, at this time, and for this publisher. I maybe making too much out the publisher, but Williams was making the transition to hardcover in the early 1960. He had sold to both Gold Medal and Dell First Edition, the top paperback original markets. Magnet seems like a big step down. But it might have been the step he was willing to take to get the book published as is.

Thanks for the John Gilmore tip. I haven't read him. Where have I been?

Yep, there is a lot of suprising good sleaze, and I mean that in a good way.

Take care, George

By "sleaze" I refer only to the genre (more accurately
"pulp erotica"), not the book--and Bedside/Magnet
published nothing but.
There are gems in any genre, to be sure--needed to
balance out the rote exercises (these last being a
staple of the Orrie Hitt school).

On e of the best "sleaze" series I've come across are
the four books John Gilmore wrote for France Books in
1963, DARK OBSESSION, MISS BRUTAL, STRANGE FIRE, and
LESBOS IN PANAMA--they're much closer to Noir than to
Sleaze, and DE & MB are truly excellent examples of
their kind.

Didn't know there was any doubt about FIRES being a CW
book; it certainly reads like him, and Magnet in 1960
wouldn't've paid too much less than GM. Interesting if
your speculation were true re its chronology.
