The Vietnam veteran cracking up in America formed an entire
cinematic subgenre in the 70s, but it's useful to recall that
these films developed out of a much older hardboiled
tradition.
In Edward Dmytryk's film CROSSFIRE, Robert Mitchum has an
interesting speech about this subject: "Soldiers don't have
anywhere to go unless you tell them where to go. When they're
off duty, they go crawling. Or they go crazy".
