I seem to remember that one of Bill Pronzini's early books
(his first novel?), _The Stalker_, follows this basic story
outline, too, though I can't right now recall the particulars
of the story. I just bought a bunch of early Pronzini
paperbacks from the 70s, all with similar photo covers,
including the first 4 Nameless books, as well as _The
Stalker_ and _Panic!_, that appear to be in pretty much mint
condition, and the cover photo shows a guy in military
uniform with his arms around a girl.
