I don't think you give Joe nearly enough credit to say he
"transcribes." I know you don't mean to portray him as any
less skillful by that, and maybe you took my mention of
imagination in the wrong way, but it is a much less demanding
task to write just what you experience. Of course, Joe uses
all the Texas details he knows, but it's his seamless way of
working all that into a plot that shows skill. Plots and
characters don't come fully formed. Life is imperfect,
without structure, unjust, artless--that's why we have
