I agree. As a typical American working-class stiff, albeit
with a college degree, with just a passing knowledge of
French culture, I was able to answer four out of the five
test questions. It was only because I don't speak French and
had read Flowers of Evil in translation that I didn't
recognize the quote at first.
I think any educated person with a working knowledge of
French would have been able to answer all of the questions.
The first film version of Les Liaisons (the "modernized"
version) was a fairly recent release in the States at that
time.
