RARA-AVIS: Black Money

BLACK MONEY was Macdonald's second novel of 1965, the only year in which he published two novels. No significance implied. Just an observation.

My own little theory about Lew Archer is that he functions as much like a psychoanalyst as a detective. As in nearly all the books, the roots of the crime in BLACK MONEY lie in the past that has to be revealed to the present. Archer says at one point, "I let the conversation go on. Such desultory continuing conversations were one of my best sources of information." The analyst in THE CHILL says something similar: "I wait and listen."
