Abigail Padgett wrote a series featuring a California social
worker, Bo Bradley, whose bipolar disorder is usually under
control by medication. I hadn't thought of the books as
hardboiled, but maybe child protective services as a setting
plus manic-depressive behavior plus her frequent realistic
problems at work could add up to an argument for HB.
