Strangely enough, I've experienced no censure whatsoever for
writing first-person about the African-American experience.
Quite the opposite.
As to its difficulty, I have to say that our job as writers
is to get inside other heads: the arts are as close as we can
ever get to that, isolated as we are within our own
personalities. As I've said in interviews, were I should only
be allowed to write about a middle-aged white man from the
South, how boring that would be -- for myself and for my
readers.
