THE PRIMITIVE is a much-altered. considerably cut version of
what Himes wrote -- still very powerful, and of course that's
the way I first read it. But Old Books a few years back
issued the full version under the name Himes originally
intended, and it's much better to go there. Same thing with
YESTERDAY WILL MAKE YOU CRY, which originally came out as
CAST THE FIRST STONE in a severely truncated edition.
I don't know what edition you have of I'LL SPIT ON YOUR
GRAVES, but I wrote an introduction to the UK edition from
Canongate. I might also point out that Tam Tam Books (which
most recently published SPIT here in the States) has just
published a new translation of Vian's small masterpiece
L'ECUME DES JOURS as FOAM OF THE DAZE.
