I finished SIMPLE JUSTICE a week ago. Somebody recommended it
here, but I couldn't remember in what context. It won an
Edgar for best first novel.
It's about a journalist shamed 7 years earlier for inventing
a story that temporarily won him a Pulitzer.
He is on the skids when his former editor asks him to
look into the murder of a local homosexual man. It's set in
Los Angeles.
It's a good book. There are some unlikely circumstances that
dampened it for me, but it is definitely well-written and
worthwhile. One caveat though. There is strong sexual
content. We talked about extreme violence recently. The book
has a flashback to a particularly horrible and brutal scene
of domestic violence. Nothing gratuitous about it though. It
belonged there.
