I'm coming in on the end of the Parker discussion but want to
add that he's one of the writers I had the most enthusiasm
for when I started reading him, and the one I grew most
disappointed with, so much so that I've avoided him for at
least the last three years.
Starting with the first books, the stories were engaging and
the characters seemed new and well-drawn, but neither
developed enough given the number of books that have been
written. The stories seem to work to pattern and the
characters are stuck. Hawk in particular seems straining to
burst out of the straitjacket he's in and Susan's such a
bitch that it's impossible for me to read about her any more.
She doesn't come across as strong, just as a mystical spoiled
brat. (Maybe I'm wrong and guys like Spenser expect her sort
of treatment.) Between Hawk and Susan, Spenser sometimes
seems emasculated.
I hope ol' Bubba Rugowski doesn't get jammed up like
Hawk.
Cheers,
Sally
