Here's one. The 1955 film THE DESPERATE HOURS is better than
the Broadway stage play which precedes it, which in turn, is
better than the novel. Joseph Hayes wrote all three, so it
often seemed to me that the novel was sort of the first
draft, the stage play the second draft, and the screenplay
the final draft.
It was remade ten or so years ago with Mickey Rourke and
Anthony Hopkins. Hayes was credited, once more, as one of the
screenwriters, but, aside form the basic situation, there was
little resemblance to the original.
