I wouldn't say Harry Crews is hardboiled; rather, I would
place him with authors like Jim Harrison, who write very
offbeat tales with down-and-outers and losers. Highly
recommendable authors (if you have the stomach), but not part
of hardboiled literature.
To complicate matters, a book like Harrison's _Sundog_
*could* be considered a noir, or at least semi-noir novel,
because of its atmosphere. It lacks the typical tension of
dark suspense, but the story fits the genre.
Best regards,
