I'd say James Bond was as hard-boiled as an Englishman can
get. He was very cold and matter-of-fact and didn't waste any
time when in action. The last line of Casino Royale always
stands out for me. Also his taking revenge for Felix Leiter
in "Live and Let Die". The local Borders has new British
imports of the Fleming books and I can't wait to read them
again as all my old copies are falling apart. The non-Fleming
books are horrible. Avoid them except for the first two
Gardner books (License Renewed and For Special Services -
absolutely wild with great twists). Benson, the new guy, does
nothing but write wanna-be movies with lots of sleazy sex.
