My (Hodder) copy-editors have often be very useful at
pointing out mistakes, anomolies, whatever. But I'm convinced
that an awful lot of what ought to be copy-editing is mostly
computer spell-checking, hence the increasing number of
homophones that you find in print: the spell-checker says
that "there" is correct, so you read, "There apples were
rotting but the pairs were beautifully ripe."
