Let me second BobT's recommendation of "Secrets of the
Wolds's Best-Selling Writer; the Storytelling Techniques of
Erle Stanley Gardner," a fascinating book. I haven't visited
the University of Texas Humanities Research Center in years,
but at one time there was a recreation of Gardner's study on
one floor of the building. You couldn't go inside the study,
but you could walk around it an look in through the windows.
Before he died, Gardner made a recording that described the
room's contents, and you could listen to that as you looked
at his stuff. It was an interesting (and maybe a little
spooky) experience.
