I read Malzberg's Lone Wolf series years ago, and it's
different from just about anything else in the "lone avenger"
field. The main character, like the Executioner and his many
imitators, goes around wiping out the Mafia
(or somebody; I can't recall for sure), but the books don't
depict him as a cold-blooded killing machine. Instead, all
the killing affects him, and he starts coming apart early on.
By the end of the series he's pretty much completely nuts.
The books were obviously written very quickly, but taken as a
series, they're more interesting than you might think.
