SHAME THE DEVIL is my second favorite Pelecanos, after DOWN BY THE RIVER WHERE THE DEAD MEN GO. It's almost a companion piece, because unlike RIVER, DEVIL is hopeful in the end. I found it a really moving and even uplifting book. Of course, I never met a Pelecanos I didn't like, so take my comments for whatever they're worth.
