I think Bogart is so perfect as Marlowe because a) he was a
nice guy b) he had class c) he was uninhibited d)he had a
sense of humor e) he had a strong presence and a deadpan
delivery, both perfect for Marlowe. I *wouldn't* want to see
Cary Grant as Marlowe. He would be too florid and would end
up swallowing the movie. This is not to slight this great
comedian. Even though I consider John Gielgud the greatest
actor I've ever seen/heard, I wouldn't want him as Marlowe,
either...
By the way, I found Mitchum too seedy and not alert enough
for Marlowe.
