I finished the book last night, and have to say it left me
cold. As you say, it's a one-joke premise, and gets past
plausibility questions by ignoring them. It didn't really
push the Chandlerian aspects of the plot past the usual
same-old, and the dinosaur aspect just got in the way of the
detective story. The twist ending, which I won't spoil, was
set up as something you were meant to gasp in shock at, but
just left me shaking my head. My opinion aside, the book must
have done pretty fair box-office, since there's one sequel
published and another on the way.
