Jim Beaver asked about Janwillem Van der Wetering a few days
back. I love his novels but they're not hardboiled. If you
know the slightest bit about Zen, you'll find them
wonderfully entertaining. Van der Wetering spent more than a
little time in Zen monasteries, in Japan and in Maine. And it
shows in his characters. His later books are not set in
Holland but in Maine, where he now lives. Read him and enjoy,
but don't expect him to be hardboiled. Frank Denton
