Hello, all.

It's more important for an actor to play a part well than to be physically right for it. Mary Astor played Brigid's mood swings well, from helpless, to hopeless, to devious. It wasn't hard for me to believe that Spade fell for her vulnerable side as well as her survivor's instincts.

If I recall, Spade is supposed to be six feet tall and blond, yet Bogart made the character his own. Arthur Fonzarelli was supposed to be tall, blonde, and Italian, but Henry Winkler became him.
