interesting that Chandler's feelings about Cain didn't stop
him from adapting Double Indemnity to the screen.
I like Chandler for his worldview and his prose. I
like Hammett for his plotting. but I love James M. Cain for
all the reasons that Chandler apparently despised him
for.
I would also say that Cain is more noir than
hardboiled, since my definition of noir is that one lives in
a world of no hope.
