For what it's worth, I agree with you (though I haven't read
THE WOMAN CHASER yet). I found the Hoke books to be very
spotty -- the best being MIAMI BLUES and THE WAY WE DIE NOW.
Personally, I think Willeford was somewhat inhibited by the
requirements of the series-character form.
