Mickey Spillane certainly doesn't need me to defend him, but
I'll say a couple of things anyway.
First of all, I probably read Spillane at just the right
time: it was in the 1950s, and I was barely a teenager. I had
no idea that one writer was any better than another; I just
knew what I liked to read. Even then, however, I knew that
Spillane was writing fantasy, but it was a fantasy I liked. A
tough guy driving down a dark road picks up a woman wearing
nothing but a raincoat? Hey, I couldn't read fast enough. I
didn't take it seriously, even for a minute, but I really
enjoyed it. Read my take on Spillane in 1001 MIDNIGHTS if you
have a copy.
