"Dr. Thorndyke was the creation of R. Austin Freeman, a
popular (and
excellent) English author who more or less pioneered the
"scientific"
approach to crime-solving in fiction."
Freeman was also the pioneer of the "inverted" story in which
the reader
(but not the detective) knew who the culprit was, so that the
question
wasn't "whodunit" but "would-he-get-away-with-it." This was
carried on
by other writers like Roy Vickers in the Dept. of Dead Ends
stories and
is seen today on the COlumbo TV series. - Jim Doherty
