Perhaps the Camus connection you all are looking for is to be
found in
Camus's book of essays, The Rebel. (Can't give you the essay
name
because it's packed up somewhere for an imminent move.)
THere's an
essay on American literature in which he mentions liking
hardboiled, and
mentions Hammett by name I think. Don't recall if Cain comes
up. I've
heard lots of stories about Camus liking this or that
hardboiled author,
but these stories are hard to verify by reading what he
wrote. The
essay in The Rebel is as close as I've come.
