<<Grimhaven is as bleak as it sounds>>
I've read GRIMHAVEN and bleak is not the word to describe the
novel. I had
never read a Hoke novel (nor a Willeford for that matter)
when I came across a
copy of the ms. at a book show in Los Angeles a few years
ago. I'd heard
comments from writers who had read the book that it was one
of the most
unpleasant reads on the planet and that only added to my
curiosity. The book
literally affected me for weeks after finishing it. I think
it's a
masterpiece, pushing "dark suspense" (or whatever it's called
these days) to
its limit, something that few contemporary novels can lay
claim to, but I can
fully understand why it was never published.
