THANK YOU
I'd like to start this posting by saying "THANK YOU!" to
Bill Denton for creating and running this show. The more I
read RARA-AVIS the more I realize just how "rara" is is; a
mailing list that stays on topic, always seems to have
fresh, interesting viewpoints on our chosen genre fiction,
is there reliably in the e-mail box every day, is
informative and entertaining and never has any spam or
flaming. Thanks, Bill, you put a lot of time and effort into
this list and I think I can safely speak for the subscribers
in saying we really appreciate it!

BOOTH/MARLOWE
On the topic of the Booth/Marlowe episodes, unfortunately
instead of adding information I will just make a plea for
more. I missed these completely, no doubt because I don't
pay for HBO, but a lot of HBO things have since become
available on videotape for rental or purchase. I am hoping
these fall into that group and if anyone knows the complete
information I'd appreciate it. These sound like something I
would enjoy watching. If they are available only for
purchase perhaps we could pitch in to get them together and
share them round-robin, though as I type that I think it
probably violates some damn law or other.

CRIME JAZZ
I realize this list is about books, but I think what follows
is on topic for this list. There are some CDs that fit in
very nicely with our hard-boiled inclinations. "Murder is My
Beat - Classic Film Noir Themes and Scenes" (Rhino Film
Music R2 72466) is very enjoyable. When I bought it I
thought it would have more themes and less in the way of
scenes, but it turns out to be scene clips and they're
great, but be warned they will probably make you want to
cast your eyeballs on the film itself! Themes/Scenes include
Asphalt Jungle, Key Largo, Murder My Sweet, Postman Always
Rings Twice, Big Sleep, Crossfire, The Letter, Born to Kill
and several others.

"Crime Jazz: Music in the First Degree" [Rhino Records, R2
72912/DRCI 1669] and "Crime Jazz: Music in the Second
Degree" [Rhino Records, R2 72913/DRCI 1622] are all music,
no scenes. Great stuff.

First Degree has music from "The Wild One", "Frankie
Machine", "The Man with the Golden Arm", theme from "Johnny
Staccato", "Touch of Evil", "Naked City", "Richard Diamond",
"M Squad" and a bunch of others. Eighteen tracks, 55:20
running time.

Second Degree has music from the films "Mirage", "Touch of
Evil", "Arabesque", "The Liquidator", "Experiment in
Terror", "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "The Asphalt Jungle"
and from TV series "77 Sunset Strip", "Mission Impossible",
"Perry Mason", "Mike Hammer" and a couple more. Eighteen
tracks, runs just over 43 minutes. The fidelity is good on
these for music from the 1960s. I really get a kick out of
listening to these, I think many of you will too. I hope
Rhino will bring out a third collection. Look in the
collections section of the movie soundtrack area of your
music store.

Happy listening,
Rick
