the end of the year, I was told by his assistant at Marvel's (?) Vertigo
Comics that he would be out for some time due to illness. Stathis had a
tape of his telephone interview with Willeford that he was going to mail
to me, but it never made it. Hard-boiled editor seems a good
description. How are these comics?>>

Actually Vertigo is an imprint of DC Comics, home to Superman, Batman, et
al. Vertigo is the more "adult" line, which features their
horror/supernatural titles, including the "Sandman Mystery Theatre" monthly
featuring a pulp-inspired mystery man wearing a gas mask and using a
truth-inducing gas gun and running around NYC circa 1939.

Sandman has some hard-boiled elements. Most of the other titles are more
fanciful themes but frequently feature fiercely violent scenes and no-holds
barred Anglo-Saxon four-letter words. Interestingly enough, many of these
titles seem to be written by British writers.

Anyway, Lou was editor on some of these, including those with more of an SF
feel. I guess his involvement there came from his years editing at Heavy
Metal.
