RARA-AVIS: Some recent favorites

Much thanks to all who have given me suggestions on reading
materiel these last few days. Here are some books I've read recently
that I think some of you may like:
1. "To the Hilt" by Dick Francis
As usual, this has something to do with horses (although less
than usual), and takes place in the British Isles. This is a real
'white-knuckler' that gives the reader an adrenalin high from start to
finish.
2. "Throwback" by Frank Strunk takes place in and around Kentucky
and may be the first 1st-class 'hill-people' thriller I've read. Do
yourself a favor and jump in.
3. "Simple Justice" by John Wilson is your usual tense, terse,
tough L.A. novel with a gay former reporter as the detective. This book
is an Edgar award winner and richly deserves the honor. I can't wait
for Mr. Wilson's next offering.
4. "Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap makes the reader run right
along with the teenaged male protagonist. Worth the time spent reading
it.
5. "Bordersnakes" by Crumley is TOP-NOTCH! It's been a month or 2
since I read it (on a Colorado-bound train) but I absolutely loved every
eccentric, out-there, colorful minute of it. This one gets an A+.
6. "Big Red Tequila" by Rick Riordan is a big and well crafted
book (maybe a little too big and wordy.) It has a definite Tex-Mex
flavor and is worth at least a B+.

I've read at least 10 more novels in the last 7 weeks, but I'm
leaving out the weak, the puerile, and those whose names I can't
remember (I give my books away when I've read them.) Hope this helps
some of you.
Sincerely,
Michael Laughrin
