Booklist has included a Mystery Showcase in the current issue - April 15, 1997. Well worth checking out! There is an interview with Donald Westlake and a review of _The Ax_. There are also reviews of the Hiney Raymond Chandler book, a nifty section called the Hard-Boiled Gazetteer to the U.S. (by Bill Ott and Brad Hooper). Some of y'all may quibble about how hard-boiled some of the authors/series really are - but overall it is a great list for those looking for new authors. They sought to list lesser known series (this may explain why Healy's great series was not included). Some of the authors mentioned include: Walter Satterthwait's Joshua Croft series, James W. Hall's Thorn series, James Crumley, Robert O. Greer, Crais' Elvis Cole, Lutz's Aldo Nudger series, Murphy's Artie Deemer series, Les Robert's Milan Jacovich series, and the Jack Flippo series by Doug Swanson. There is also a top five section - top five picks for lesser known male sleuths/female sleuths, etc. The top five modern noir list: American Tabloid - Ellroy Give Us a Kiss - Woodrell Miami Purity - Hendricks Suspects - Thomson Wild at Heart - Gifford The reviewer's Choice picks were also interesting - including Cold In July - Lansdale, The Long Goodbye - Chandler, The Wrong Case - Crumley, and A Tan and Sandy Silence - MacDonald. _COUNT ME OUT_ got a starred review, as did _SPARES_ by Michael Marshal Smith. _SPARES_ is one of my favorites so far this year. Set in the future, in New Richmond, this is is a great read for both sci-fi and crime fans.
