May I (independently) agree with Jerry Healy that all Rara-Avis-ians should read his Cuddy series. Beautifully written, well plotted, and much better Boston than Parker's Spencer! Several people mentioned Pronzini and Muller. Neither is really noir, and they're not always as heavily boiled as those of you who read Jim Thompson or James Elroy might prefer. But both Pronzini and Muller are excellernt writers, and (as one of you said) Pronzini's SHACKLES is one of the best PI novels ever. Some time ago, there was a brief discussion of the pulp writer Frederick Nebel. I agree that he was one of the best of the breed. A few years ago, when Otto still ran Mysterious Press, a series called "Dime detective Classics" was issued in trade paperback; they were edited by Bob Weinberg, though I don't believe the books themselves credited him. Authors were Carroll John daly (2 volumes), Hank Searls, Erle Stanley Gardner, Norbert davis, and Frederick Nebel--the latter with THE ADVENTURES OF CARDIGAN. Weinbereg told me that the series didn't sell well--under 1500 copies each. But copies must be available from dealers and used bookeries--and some libraries (I had the Old Dominion Unviersity Library order them).
