Harry, I see from the archives that you know about 32 Cadillacs by Joe
Gores. For anyone who doesn't, it's a fast-paced PI novel with a strong
comic element and a cast of quirky characters. The plot involves a bunch
of Gypsies who manage to steal 32 cadillacs (in one day? two?), and the
PI firm that goes after them. I highly recommend it.
OT, but I'll just throw this in anyway: Stand on It, by William Neely
and Robert Ottum. Amazon product description: "Stand on It is the
ribald, lunatic 'autobiography' of one of the craziest, meanest race car
drivers who ever lived -- Stroker Ace. Filled with the gritty
authenticity and roaring excitement of the professional racing world,
Stand on It is a hard, tough, funny novel that explodes with life as you
follow Stroker Ace's drinking, loving, brawling exploits in bedrooms and
back rooms and on the track.
I thought it was great when I read it as a teenager, but no guarantees.
The movie Stroker Ace, with Burt Reynolds, was supposedly terrible.
