I just heard on another list that Dick Francis passed away.
I have a hard time calling Francis's work noir, but they sure as hell were hard-boiled. Heroes didn't come any tougher than the collection of working class jockeys, trainers, horse owners, rancher, private eyes, intelligence officers, who headlined Francis's novels, the first-person narration made you think of regular guy telling a story over a beer in an unpretentious working man's pubs.
He leaves an impressive body of work behind, but he'll be missed.
Dear Lord, this has been a dismal two or three years for losing writers in our sub-genres!
