I've read maybe a dozen Patterson novels, probably started that many that I didn't finish. The quality varies widely depending on who his collaborator is. I thought most of the ones done by Andrew Gross were okay thrillers and really liked the lone historical novel by Patterson and Gross, THE JESTER.
I think I've about read my fill of them, although I'll probably read Gross's solo novels eventually.

I can remember at least a half dozen times when someone has told how much they enjoy Patterson when it comes up in conversations that I enjoy reading crime fiction. It's happened a few times when I've recommended Pelecanos' DC-based books as well.
I haven't taken anyone up on their recommendation and perhaps that's my loss, but the people recommending Patterson have definitely read his books.
