I like the movie, too, but the book has so much that is exemplary, from the way Willeford moves things along with straight declarative sentences, to the amount of detail on the art of cockfighting, to the strange humor that pervades the story.
The movie has classic touches, too, well worth finding and watching. It's amazing what can be done with a little Corman money...
