In his amazingly complete biography of Macdonald, Tom Nolan notes that the
author later misquoted himself, saying that "We call came out from Hammett's
overcoat." I suppose this may have been an early sign of the condition that
did him in.

MacDonald is obviously playing with the famous quote (attributed to
Dostoevsky) "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'"
I like the analogy, though. And I've enjoyed lately the threads for the
titles of some south of the border noir to look up.

Has anyone ever done a caricature of this, with Chandler, Macdonald,
Spillane and others crawling out under of a black mask, held by Dashiell
Hammett?
