I'm pretty sure all the Afghanistan stuff in VALLEY OF FEAR is just
the back story for the narrator; and as I recall, he and the hero, a
high strung coke addict and thrill junkie who spends days shut up in
his room reading the papers obsessively looking for anything to keep
his mind occupied, serve as a sort of frame for this tale of Irish
gangs and murder in the coal mines. It even involves one of those
James Bond-style supervillains! What a tale! I am waiting for my copy
in the mail right now!
