A Taste for Ashes is remarkable, one of the best PI novels I have ever read. It is the great work of Howard Browne. The other novels are good, but this one is also original, not a Chandler imitation. The Browne short stories are also excellent, as is his late historical novel Pork City (1988) about Al Capone and other boys in Chicago.
