"Puzzle For Fools," by a very good old-school writer (well, two writers)
seldom if ever mentioned here, Patrick Quentin, has series hero Peter Duluth
checking into a sanatorium to dry out when the inevitable murders start. Not
exactly noir nor hardboiled, but a little twisted. More recently, Howard
Swindle's "Jitter Joint" has a cop losing it after witnessing an horrific
crime and being sent to a rehab center that, for some reason I can't recall,
is in the frozen tundra. It combines the murders-in-a-sanatorium plot with
the totally-cut-off-from-the-outside-world situation. The book is worth
looking up, the movie made from it, "Eye See You," starring Sylvester
Stallone isn't as good, but it has a few moments.
