But Thomas Pynchon does. He even appeared on The Simpsons.
Evidently, Pynchon doesn't sneer at Americans and their pop culture
(of which he's very much a part) quite as much as some of his more
elitist fans do.
There's an interesting essay in this Sunday's NYTBR about pop culture,
by the way. And for you total fans out there, Pynchon narrates his own
promo video for INHERENT VICE. You can see (and hear it) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjWKPdDk0_U&feature=PlayList&p=6E100BA6B5A092C1&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=6
.
I'm reading INHERENT VICE myself right now, and so far I'm failing to
see what the fuss -- either way -- is about. Reminds me a lot of
Crumley, with a definite touch of Altman's LONG GOODBYE tossed in.
Nothing particularly original, but nothing particularly bad, either.
I'm enjoying it.
